THE STORY
The 100+ year old barn house, sitting on five acres an hour north of Seattle, was bought as-is off market. Originally, the plan was to convert it into an Airbnb but ultimately it was a flip and resale. We maintained as much of the original wood as possible including the Burl stair post, stairs, posts, wood on some walls. The footprint remained similar but with an upper open concept loft bedroom and new deck.

Outside, we kept the original front doors and window paneled entry. We used stained cedar planks for siding and a black metal roof. In back, we created a covered patio under the upper level deck designed for outdoor seating and entertaining.

Inside, The kitchen/dining area was the most striking transformation. We rearranged the appliances, added a breakfast counter and a buffet as well as a pantry and laundry area. Countertop material is quartz but resembles soap stone. Though we kept a rustic flavor in the kitchen and dining area, we included current amenities. Our contractor built a custom dining table using old bed posts that were left with belongings in the shed.

The master bath is in the original location but was transformed into a rustic Mediterranean style bathroom with a stone walk-in shower. For the vanity, our contractor used reclaimed slabs that we found in a building salvage store in Seattle.

All other bathrooms reflected the vintage rustic style with stone vessel and farmhouse sinks. Fixtures are vintage replicas or farmhouse. We added one full bath and an upper half bath.

In the great room, we created a fireplace wall with oversized tile. The woodburning stove couldn't be salvaged so it was replaced with a current one. Lighting is warm recessed, a large wagon wheel chandelier overhead to replace the ceiling fan, and farmhouse sconces on the walls.
